A/Prof Campbell is a consultant ophthalmologist at Coastal Eye Centre, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, the Centre for Eye Research Australia at the University of Melbourne, and the NQ Eye Foundation. He is passionate about trying to improve outcomes in ophthalmology through the integration of research and clinical practice. A/Prof Campbell is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with subspecialty expertise in medical retina, ocular genetics, electrodiagnostics, and ocular inflammation. He treats medical and surgical diseases of the eye such as cataract, glaucoma, age related macular degeneration, and diabetes.


He completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Queensland before moving to the UK, where he undertook an M.Sc and D.Phil in neuroscience at Oxford University. He then worked at St Cross College and the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford as a research fellow in medical genetics. After completing this fellowship in medical genetics he returned to Australia and to study medicine at the University of Queensland. His junior doctor years were spent in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and the Gold Coast before undertaking specialty training in ophthalmology through the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.


A/Prof Campbell’s subspecialty training in ocular genetics and electrodiagnostics, medical retina, ocular inflammation, and complex cataract surgery was carried out at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, the Centre for Eye Research Australia, Monash Hospital, and the Royal Children's Hospital.


A/Prof Campbell is actively involved in research and has publications in journals such as Nature, Medical Journal of Australia, Journal of Neuroscience, and Ophthalmic Genetics. He is involved in large clinical trials for new intravitreal agents for retinal diseases such as neovascular AMD, geographic atrophy, retinal vein occlusions, and diabetic macular oedema.
